Canon Character Information
Appearance: Vex'ahlia is a half-elf, with the resulting pointed ears. She has long, dark hair which she usually wears in a braid adorned with blue feathers.
History: Vex and Vox Machina
Personality: Vex generally plays her cards very close to her chest. As a child in Syngorn she experienced discrimination by the elves of the city, who are apt to view all races as inferior to elves and half-elves as lesser even than humans. In combination with the distance her father kept from his children and a later instance in which trusting strangers led to her capture, this led to Vex developing a sort of protective outer shell. She rarely shows her emotions openly, frequently opting to be either flirtatious, sarcastic or no-nonsense to the point of seeming stern.
She uses this mask to her advantage in matters of money, with which she is tight-fisted nearly to the point of obsession, unable to let gold change hands without haggling to get a better deal. This likely ties back to the years after the twins left Syngorn and had to scrape by on what they could hunt or steal. While it often results in a favorable outcome when she purchases supplies at a discounted rate or negotiates a higher payment for a job the party takes, it can mean that she offends people by undervaluing what they're offering. This is uncharacteristic for Vex, who is usually extremely perceptive and makes an effort to be charming or flirtatious when she thinks doing so will get her what she wants. Her greed also led to her (temporary) death when a fellow party member opened a trapped chest and Vex's rush to see what was inside it led to her taking the full force of the blast. She was resurrected by a cleric traveling with the party at the time, but she completely failed to learn a lesson from the experience and continues to haggle, flirt, and occasionally (when she thinks she can get away with it) steal.
More than money, however, Vex craves a sense of family and belonging. After feeling emotionally distanced from their father and finding that their mother was killed when the red dragon Thordak razed their hometown, Vex and her twin brother Vax came to depend on each other to the point where they are happy to trade their own wellbeing for the other. Vax’s contribution to the ritual to resurrect Vex was offering his life to the death goddess The Raven Queen in place of his sister’s. Luckily for the twins the Raven Queen demanded a life in service to her rather than taking him literally and they both lived, but when Vex learned she’d died and been brought back she didn’t dwell on what had happened to her at all. Instead she focused on how grim and quiet her brother had become and began researching the Raven Queen in an unsuccessful attempt to reassure him. It’s notably the only outcome of the whole ordeal she considers negative, claiming to feel more alive than ever. She also has a great fondness for her much younger half-sister Vellora, who as a full-blooded elf is loved by their shared father Syldor and fully accepted in elven society. Though Vellora has everything Vex wants - family, respect, security and money - Vex's initial jealousy fades as soon as she actually meets the girl. On the second occasion they meet Vex is upset enough at her father that she tells him through tears that if she could pull his blood from her veins she would, and Percy goes so far as to actually grant Vex a title so she can feel on more equal footing with the man; none of this prevents Vex from doting on Vellora, giving her a gift and (to Vellora's delight and her parents' despair) joining Vax in teaching her to swear.
Vellora is a good example of the soft side of Vex, which she generally tries to keep hidden. She came by her animal companion Trinket as a cub during the incident in which she was captured; instead of fleeing immediately after felling the poachers who'd intended to sell her (or worse) she lingered to put a live bear from which they'd been harvesting skin, claws and flesh out its misery. When she noticed the bear had a cub she felt it was her duty to protect it, given that she'd killed its mother, and took it with her. She displays her love for her brother through almost childish teasing, and is always delighted whenever circumstances allow Pike to rejoin them between her duties as a cleric of Sarenrae. She's also very physically affectionate with those she's close to, constantly touching them, ruffling hair or bestowing quick kisses on party members.
Her protectiveness towards her loved ones brings out a streak of savagery in Vex. When a fellow party member puts her bear companion Trinket in danger she becomes enraged with him, but perhaps the clearest example is when a party member she has romantic feelings for is killed. Vex not only puts an arrow through the heart of the woman who killed him, she fires an additional and entirely unnecessary arrow into her mouth as she screams.
She’s also prone to double standards. She constantly tries to bargain down on perfectly reasonable prices when shopping for supplies and thinks nothing of taking things that don’t belong to her if they’re unguarded, but is outraged if people try to take something that belongs to her or the party. Likewise when Vax confesses his love to their fellow party member Keyleth she’s frustrated by Keyleth saying she needs time to think on it (more frustrated, it seems, than Vax himself is) and despite the otherwise good relationship between the women tells her that if she has feelings for him she either needs to tell him or stop stringing him along. Vex, on the other hand, tells Percy that her heart is his during his resurrection ritual, but doesn’t restate it when he tells them that he didn’t hear any of what was said when they brought him back.
While all of this makes her sound like something of a terrible person – a hypocritical, violent, thieving penny-pincher with an inferiority complex in a co-dependent relationship with her brother* - Vex usually tries to do the right thing. When she’s violent, she’s violent in aid of protecting what’s important to her. Her double standards in relation to what she’s willing to pay versus what she thinks she should be paid are justified (in her mind) the fact that she’s gathering money and buying supplies in order to take down a group of dragons who are putting the whole continent at risk; Vox Machina’s gain in the short term will be everyone’s gain in the long term. She’s focused on the forest rather than the trees and trusts that everyone will see that in the end, and if they don’t? Then their opinions don’t matter.
*Please note that they are in no way doing the Lannister Lambada and would be disgusted by the suggestion.

First Person: example
Third Person: Not everything in this strange new place is different. Vex's ranger habits have been in overdrive, assessing and cataloguing every new sound or smell, and it's a comfort to be able to turn them back to something as familiar as hunting. Get a task, kill a creature, and return; there's a simple pleasure in that, and a kind of comfort that (nearly) takes the sharp edges off the loss of the party's considerable purse when she arrived.
She nocks an arrow and draws it back until the bowstring is tense in her hand, pleading to put the arrow into flight. Exhales, and in the space between heartbeats that flood her ears with the joy of the hunt she releases, unable to stop a grin from spreading over her face when the arrow strikes its target and the beast gives a bone-shaking roar of protest. Hunting for food never feels this way – she's not sentimental enough to feel guilt over feeding the party but she takes care to put an arrow through an eye when she can, giving an instant and painless death as thanks for what she'll take from the animal. For a larger beast like this, something that's been feeding on the locals and spreading fear, she counts every roar of pin as a point in her favor in the fight.
She pulls another arrow and smiles, teeth sharp and white in the thrill of the hunt.
“Well, it knows we're here,” she says lightly. “Let's wrap this up quickly and go for a drink.”
